You probably already realize there are ups and downs in this wonderful world of entrepreneurship. And the same holds true about being a skincare, lash, brow or waxing specialist. You’ll have things you absolutely love about your business, but there are going to be aspects that aren’t always so glamorous either.

Now, if you want to become a beauty boss who can battle through tough times and bask in the glory of good times, you’ll need to know what to expect. Lucky for you, I’ve witnessed a LOT over my 20+ years in the industry, so today, I’m dropping a few pros and cons you’ll need to be aware of.

PRO #1: It’s an incredibly emotionally rewarding field.

There’s no doubt about it, if you love making people feel gorgeous – you’re going to feel great about your work. As an esthetician, for example, you’ll help people look their best day in and day out.

You’ll give them a huge confidence boost and in turn, feel great every time a client walks out your door. In your own way, you’re using your talents to make the world a better place.

PRO #2: Variety is the spice of life.

Not thrilled about waking up to the same thing every single day? Well, as a beauty boss you won’t have to because you’ll experience something different every day. While you might keep a regular schedule, the actual procedures, conversations, clients and surprises will rarely have you feeling bored with what you do.

This makes being a beauty boss an awesome choice for anyone who hates strict and predictable routines. You also can often set your own schedule and enjoy that freedom lifestyle so many talk about on social media.

PRO #3: Your options are limitless.

You can choose not only to specialize in anything ranging from brows to hair care to lashes and skin, but you also have the option of selecting the best entrepreneurial path for you. For example, as an esthetician, you might enjoy the structure and freedom of owning a day spa or even working as an independent consultant for a major spa chain.

Alternatively, you might choose to travel the world by working in a cruise ship spa. Whether you choose to start your own spa, or find work as a representative for a skincare line or in a department store or in a smaller specialty store, the options for success are limitless.

Now, let’s flip the coin and discuss some of the cons to becoming a beauty boss.

CON #1: Competition is fierce.

In recent years, the demand for quality beauty services has been on the rise. And while that means good things for the industry, it also means that more people are trying to cash in on it.

To overcome this con, you’ll need to set yourself apart from the crowd by marketing your “special something” so you build a community of loyal clients who can keep you profitable for years to come.

CON #2: You’re at the mercy of the economy.

For most people, investing in an esthetician, for example, is a luxury, not a necessity. This means it’s one of the first things people cut out when times get tough financially.

To beat this con, you’ll need to position your service and the experience you provide as something your clients don’t want to live without.

CON #3: You need to be on top of your game every day.

The results of your work are totally in your hands. This means you can never really have a bad day. Even if you’re tired or upset, you need to push those feelings aside and take care of your clients. This can be really challenging for some people, especially if you’re used to hiding behind a computer or in a cubicle.

To overcome this con, think about your “why” so you remember the importance of staying the course. You’ll also want to reflect on happier times to push you through the tough times. While the rain and storms will come, you have the power to create rays of sunshine each day.
