Confession: I am a successful beauty expert running a profitable, in-demand business, AND I have experienced self-doubt. And I’m not alone. According to an article published by The Telegraph, a recent study found that 40 percent of millennial women struggle with self-doubt in the workplace compared to just 22 percent of men.

But with glamorous Instagram snapshots and “turn-up” posts about living a luxury laptop lifestyle, you’d never know it. Why? Because today’s high-achieving millennials and established beauty experts are good at faking it. While some are, in fact, “making it,” the vast majority – even the best of the best – still experience self-doubt. It’s part of being human, but it’s the part most beauty influencers will never reveal on social media.

So, if you’ve ever said, “I’m not good enough,” “I don’t have what it takes to build a brand as large as hers,” or “I’m not as talented as _____,” please know you’re NOT the only one. The good news is there are ways to quiet your inner “Doubting Debbie” and unlock the confidence you need to achieve your goals.

Now, when you’ve trained your brain to put yourself down time and time again, it can be tough to tune out the negative noise that keeps crawling back inside your mind. But there are a few strategies you can use.

Strategy #1: Stop Comparing Yourself to Everyone Else

Comparing yourself, your life and your business to others is a surefire way to set yourself up for disappointment. Remember, the things others share on social media are highlight reels of their best moments. No one wants the bad times published for the world to see, so people tend to go out of their way to hide anything negative.

As a result, it’s unlikely you’ll ever really know what’s going on behind the scenes, leaving you with unrealistic expectations of what your life can (and should) look like as a beauty expert.

So, if you’re going to play the comparison game, play it against your former self or what your beauty business looked like in the past. It’s a great way to see how far you’ve come and give yourself a confidence boost.

Strategy #2: Tell Your Brain “No”

When you feel negative thoughts bubbling up, be quick to tell your brain you’re not going down that road. Sometimes, just acknowledging the fact you’re thinking cynical thoughts and choosing to focus on something else is enough to disrupt the negative chain.

At times like these, it can help to think about past successes, happy clients and everything else you’ve already overcome in this wild and crazy beauty industry. Now, you can’t stop the negative thoughts from creeping in, but you can certainly stop them from taking over.

Strategy #3: Remember That People Don’t Care as Much as You Think

Seeking external validation can easily amplify self-doubt. You see, people don’t need to say anything for you to assume they’re judging you. But keep in mind that they probably don’t care nearly as much as you think they do. There’s a good chance people aren’t focused on what you’re doing or judging you at all.

Other people are just as busy and focused on their own lives – the same as you are. They don’t have the time to judge your every move. And if people do make negative comments about what you’re doing, it’s a reflection of them, not you! So, take heed to constructive criticism and brush off the rest.
