Tip #1: Make Your Goals Descriptive & Specific

When you set a goal, you need to lay out exactly what it is you want to do. Saying that you want to grow your customer base isn’t very specific, so instead, you might say that you want to bring in at least 5 new clients by the end of the month. 

Tip #2: Set Realistic Goals

Are the goals you’re setting something you’ll be able to achieve, or are you setting yourself up to fail from the start? It’s always great to have a few stretch goals so you can push yourself, but if you find yourself constantly failing to meet the goals you’ve set, you’ll likely be discouraged quickly.

Tip #3: Write Them Down

A notebook or a word document can work, but if your goals are financial or involve more complex data, make sure you use the appropriate programs too to make tracking easier. Writing goals down gives them a new kind of life and makes them feel more official.

Tip #4: Assign Actions

What actions do you need to take on a daily, monthly, or weekly basis to achieve your goals? Write those down too. You may find it helpful to write these actions down in your planner and to-do lists so they don’t slip your mind.

Tip #5: Schedule Periodic Goal Check-Ins

Set aside some time to check in on your goals. What progress have you made? Is it looking better or worse than you expected? Answering these questions will make it easier to see if you need to change your strategy going forward or if you found something that’s worked really well for you. Do this on a fairly regular basis so you don’t find yourself scrambling at the end of your deadline.

Tip #6: Assess Your Final Results

Once your initial time frame is up, it’s time to assess your total progress. Did you meet your final goal? If you did, then take the time to celebrate your achievement and think about what strategies you can take away from this win. 

Now, if you didn’t meet your objective, that’s okay too! You’ll still have plenty of new insight to take away. Analyze where you went wrong, set a new goal, and try again.
